Affection

Roshan is the name of my grandson. But he calls himself Yoshan as he is yet to learn the sound of R. He is only three and a half years old. Everyone thinks he is more attached to me. I too find time to be with him as much as I can, because it gives me happiness. I used to think that his achamma is his enemy number one as she feeds him by force and will never relent whatever troubles he makes. They always fight, mostly in the process of feeding him. Others at home are not much concerned about his eating, including his mother. Even though there is a big fight on account of this between the grand mother and him, invariably she wins. Of late I have been noticing that my impression about his affection for his grandmother was different. If someone tells him that his mother or the so-called most loved one, that is me, is going to the hospital, he would feel bad, but will not resist and carryon with his work. But in the case of his grand mother he would never let her go to the hospital. He will cry aloud, make scenes and will create all sorts of problems. For a periodic check up she had to be taken to the hospital one day. To avoid trouble, I gave him a hint the previous day that, achamma has to be taken to the hospital for a check up tomorrow and in two to three hours time she will be back. He said “No, you don’t take her to the hospital”. “If I don’t take her to the hospital, who will give her medicine?” I asked him back. After a few minutes, he came to me with the box containing her medicines and told me “look, all her medicines are available in this box. Don’t take her to the hospital”. I felt pity for him and told him that it was not for medicine I am taking her, but for getting the names of medicines written by doctor for buying them. After some time he came back to me again with a familiar piece of paper on which she had written down the names of medicines and their dosage. I found that he has filled up the empty spaces in the paper with dots, dashes and other scribbling neatly. This time he was almost ordering me not to take his achamma to the hospital as “Yoshan” has already written down the names of medicines.
